Hold a quick-light disc to a flame until it sparks through, then wait for a thin coat of white ash.قرّب قرص الفحم من اللهب حتى يتّقد، ثم انتظر حتى تكسوه طبقة رقيقة من الرماد الأبيض.

Place a sliverضع قطعة صغيرة
A piece no larger than a grain of rice. Let it smoulder; never let it flame.قطعة لا تتجاوز حبّة الأرز. دعها تتصاعد بهدوء، ولا تدعها تشتعل.

Agarwood is a wound that heals into perfume. This is how a piece reaches our counter.العود جرحٌ يلتئم فيصير عطراً. هكذا تصل القطعة إلى متجرنا.

Aquilaria, an evergreen of South and Southeast Asian forests. Its healthy heartwood is pale, light and almost scentless.الأكويلاريا، شجرة دائمة الخضرة في غابات جنوب آسيا وجنوب شرقها. خشبها السليم فاتح وخفيف يكاد يخلو من الرائحة.

The woundالجرح
When the tree is injured and infected by mould, it defends itself by flooding the wood with a dark, fragrant resin.حين تُجرح الشجرة ويصيبها الفطر، تدافع عن نفسها فتغمر خشبها براتنج داكن عطِر.

The yearsالسنوات
The resin builds slowly. The densest, darkest pieces take decades to form.يتكوّن الراتنج ببطء، وأكثف القطع وأدكنها تحتاج عقوداً لتتشكّل.

The pale wood is carved away with small blades until only the resinous heart is left.يُكشط الخشب الفاتح بشفرات صغيرة حتى لا يبقى إلا القلب الراتنجي.

The gradeالتصنيف
Pieces are sorted by colour, resin, weight and scent. The densest sink in water; the trade calls them sinkers.تُفرز القطع بحسب اللون والراتنج والوزن والرائحة. وأكثفها يغرق في الماء، ويسمّيه أهل السوق: الغرقي.

Finally the wood is weighed by the tola, the measure oud has been sold by across the Gulf for generations.وأخيراً يوزن الخشب بالتولة، الوزن الذي يُباع به العود في الخليج منذ أجيال.

Every price on our counter is quoted per tola. Oils follow the same custom: a quarter tola is 3 ml, a full tola 12 ml.كل أسعارنا بالتولة. ويتبع الدهن العرف نفسه: ربع التولة ٣ مل، والتولة الكاملة ١٢ مل.
